Are You Afraid of the Dark: Season 2 Episode 1: The Tale of the Final Wish

“A fairy tale can soon become a scary tale”- Kristen Circa 1993

Wow can you believe it we are on to season 2 of Are You Afraid of the Dark. This is also the last season we will see Kristen and David before their families move away. Tonight’s tale is brought to us from Kristen, who has gotten better at telling tales since last season. Lets begin with the summary shall we?!

The night starts with Kristen reading a fairy tale to David. They are having some alone time near the fire, maybe David finally confessed his undying love for her over the break? Anyway Frank walks into the clearing and sees the book in Kristen’s hands. He tells her that Fairy tales are weak (this exchange of dialog is similar to that of Tucker and Betty Ann in the tale of the Dollmaker next season). Kristen is dressed like a beer wench, if you have seen the slot machine game beer haus, I believe they used a photo of her from this very episode to model after the beer wench in the game. Also this is the first time Kristen is not late, the Gary must have put her on notice to get their on time or else not to bother coming. Betty Ann and Gary come into the clearing next, as David is telling Frank about the real fairy tales and how they are not kiddie stories. Gary mentions that the stories are full of stabbings and demons. Betty Ann mentions her favorite she says “The one where the old woman kidnaps the prince and puts blood on the queen’s mouth while she sleeps to make the King think she ate him.” (Maybe this is why other members think her stories are gory?)  David responds “That’s so gross. I love it!” (I think David and Betty Ann hang out together outside of meetings to watch slasher flicks). I also think David hit puberty before this season as he has a deeper voice and looks more confident. Frank however is not buying it as he says “A kiddie story is a kiddie story no matter how you cut it.” Then Kiki shows up and she reacts the same way as Frank. Kristen then tells them about her story and submits it to the Midnight Society as the Tale of the Final Wish

This episode has a guest star, Bobcat Goldthwait from Police Academy fame. This was the first of many guest stars in AYAOTD, for season 2.

Our story begins with an homage to Snow White, where are main character Jill is having a nightmare. The beautiful woman tires to get her to eat a poison apple, before turning around into an evil queen and saying she will force her to eat it. Jill than wakes up to get a drink of water. She gets up get some and when she sits back down on her bed, two hands reach out from underneath of it, sending Jill running into her parent’s room. They tell her it is just a nightmare, but reluctantly go into her room. Her dad checks under her bed and finds (wait for it) an old plate of food. Jill mom kind of makes fun of her (she is totally going to win mom of the year). Jill gets upset and her brother asks what is going on. Her parents tell him that Jill just had a nightmare. Once the parents leave, he confessed to being under the bed and scaring her, because according to him she must want something to be under there as she is always looking (I used to think something was under my bed as well but I was 7 years old and watching this show, so it is understandable).  Also Jill’s bedroom looks not unlike an IKEA showroom.

The next day Jill makes her mom late by missing the bus. Her family tells her to grow up and to leave the fantasy world behind. Once at school Jill’s “friends” (who are total bitches), are ogling over the resident 7th grade hottie, he doesn’t have a name so I shall call him Frank. Frank walks over and ask Jill for the reading assignment from yesterday. Her bitchy friends than proceed to embarrass her in front of Frank, by pulling out her fairy tale books and a troll doll. Frank doesn’t seemed bothered by it but Jill runs off.

That night Jill has a weird fantasy dream about Frank, only he is dressed as prince Charming and is about to kiss her when she wakes up. Her brother who I think is obsessed with her is standing next to her bed wearing a mask and scares her. She kicks him out of her room and she sits next to her window while clutching the sandman book and says “I wish everybody would just leave me alone”. Jill goes back to sleep and wakes up again at some point during the night and out from her bed pops the Sandman, who is played by Bobcat Goldthwait.

The Sandman takes her back to his layer in the land of nod, where Jill sees her friends and family peacefully sleeping away. The Sandman tells her they will now sleep forever since she wished for it. Jill says she did not, but the Sandman reminds her that she sat and wished on a star clutching his book and said “What wrong with wanting to live in a world where you can wish on a star? I wish everybody would leave me alone.” He tells her this is her fairy tale and offers to tell her the ending before saying he can not because that would be cheating. Also the Sandman must suffer from hearing loss as he doesn’t speak in a normal tone, but literally screams at her the entire time and he is quickly becoming my least favorite character of all time, like I might actually like Eric better than this fool. Plus he has crazy eyes, you know when people look like they never blink, that is what he looks like.

Anyway Jill runs away from him and ends up in different stories along the way. She demands to be sent back to her world and threatens to break his sand timer. Jill breaks the timer (and there is some horrible CGI effects and I feel they really over did it on the purple). Jill is sent back into her world and wakes up screaming. Her parents run into her room and she laughs, telling them it was just a dream. They are all confused and I think she might need to stop taking LSD before bed. Her mom tells her while she is happy Jill is going to grow up, not to grow up completely since she is still a kid. Make up your mind mom, first you complain that she is too childish and now you don’t want her to grow up fast? You can’t have it both ways.

Kristen ends her story and the gang congratulates her on a great story, even Frank and Kiki. Frank takes Kristen’s hand on bend knee (and it looks like he may propose to her) and  says ” I just have one question, where’s the part about the kids getting their heads chopped off?” They all laugh at Frank as it to say “Oh Frank.” Gary even shakes his head and smiles. It ends with them gathered around Frank, who is now looking at Kristen’s book. Gary once again does not declare the meeting over and they haven’t put out the fire yet. I assume this is because Kristen is going to read them again story.

Moira’s Thoughts:

I can’t help but feel that the writers were inspired by the Jim Henson fantasy classic, Labyrinth for this episode as there are many similarities between the two stories. In Labyrinth, Sarah has to go to the Goblin king to get her baby brother back, in the final wish Jill has to defeat the Sandman to free her family and friends from eternal slumber. So you can see the similarities between the two, to bad they couldn’t get David Bowie to play the Sandman, he would have been awesome!

  1. I liked this story as I felt it was a nice change and Kristen was a good storyteller, however I could also see this being a Betty Ann story or even a David story.
  2. I think the way Frank is portrayed in this episode shows him as a struggling student who probably does not read much.
  3. I really did not like the Sandman, he yells way to much for my liking and I did not care about Jill either. In fact while I did like the story, I did not like the actors or characters they portrayed.
  4. Since Gary and Betty Ann walked in together, and based on the body language they displayed, I thought that perhaps they had started a relationship, but maybe they are best friends, even though I thought that Kiki was Betty Ann’s bestie.

So do you like this summary? Lets give a hand to Kristen for opening up this season with The Tale of the Final Wish. Join me next time for another Kristen story of season The Tale of Locker 22.

Until next time…..Submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society (especially the Gary), I call this story: The Tale of Moira’s Afraid of the Dark (But not really) first blog of the second season!

If you want to tweet it at anyone in particular like *cough*Ross Hull or Raine Pare-Coull or Jodie Resther, *cough* to make them aware of me wanting to interview them, that would be cool. I feel that if enough people tweet at them or Facebook them, they will think it is a good idea. As a thank you, I will upload a video of me doing the nea nea and if you all help me get all three, I will upload a video of me singing He Mele No Lilo in full Hawaiian (since I took 2 years of the language). Mahalo for your continued support in this endeavor. Please help my dream come true!
